Upper Marlboro

Established in 1706 by the Act for the Advancement of Trade and Erecting Ports and Towns, Upper Marlborough the name was shortened in the early part of this century quickly became known as the commercial, political and social center of Prince George's County. According to tradition, the town was named after John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough who, at that time, was England's most popular hero for his contribution in the War of the Spanish Succession. The first courthouse was completed in 1721 and was rebuilt on the same site in 1798. During this time many prominent merchants, lawyers and politicians lived and worked in the area. In 1750, horse racing came to Upper Marlborough and attracted many from the surrounding area. For 250 years, the town has been the equestrian capital of Southern Maryland. Upper Marlboro has remained the legislative and judicial center of Prince George's County for nearly three centuries.
